i just bought a 1987 535 yamaha virago , it will only start and run with the choke on , as soon as i turn the choke off the bike dies does anyone know why ?

The intermediate fuel jets are plugged up.
Carbs need to come off and be disassembled, all parts except rubber & plastic soaked in carb cleaner, rinsed, blowen with high pressure air, assembled, installed and syncronized.

as wyiron said, clean the carbs. While you're at it, check the intake manifold for cracks, dried out "o" rings or leaky gaskets. Yamaha's are prone to air leaks where the manifold and head meet.
Make sure you adjust the float level also and DO NOT mix the jets and emulsion tubes (jet holders) for front and rear cylinders if they are different
