I have not had any experience with this problem on kawasakis but on past bikes i have had it is usually down to worn dogs on the gears themselves, does it happen in every gear or just when changing from first to second or second to third for example.

this problem is actually caused from bent shift forks in the transmission, this in turn will cause the dogs and slots on the sides of the gears to wear and "round" out because of excessive "jumping" out of gear.
Yes the repair is the same, you have to split the cases, or in some, you might be able to remove the clutch and oil pan and go in that way but you will not be able to repair it properly this way. The best way is to split the cases.
Depending on your area and labor rates it usually ends up around $900 to $1500 to repair. If you were in Central Oregon I could do it for you.

Mjello - motomech is right, you have to get the engine out and take it apart in order to get to the gear shafts and shift forks.
